5 reasons why you should visit Estremoz

Estremoz is pretty but subtle, big but not overwhelming, charming during the day but even more at night.

Estremoz is one of those places which will “uau” you for its richness and diversity. Everything seems to come out of nowhere when you’re driving on national 4, and then out of the sudden an amazing castle on the horizon.

This city is so appealing because its proposition is complete: good food, wine, culture, sightseeing, and beautiful architecture.

But what is really impressive is its size, compared to the actual population. Only 7 thousand people live there, but you wouldn’t say so, especially on Saturday mornings when the local market is on. This is however sad news, because it also means the population of Estremoz is on a low and peaked 70 years ago when it was 3 times larger.

“Estremoz has the advantage of being less crowed than Évora, whilst remaining rich and diverse from a cultural point of view ”

Let me give you 5 reasons why you should visit Estremoz:

1. Castle of Queen Santa Isabel

The first construction dates from the 12th century. Together with Elvas this castle is one of the most important fortifications of Alentejo - especially during the war with Spain for the restoration of independence. During this period it was used as headquarters for the Portuguese troops. It’s part of the National Military tourism route.

2. Castle gates

Before going into the Castle, you should definitely go around the city to visit the several fortified gates of the city, which are part of the 2nd defense line. These are very pretty and will give you an opportunity for a bit of a foot walk.

3. Herdade das Servas

Just 11 minutes away from Casa do Vagar, this restaurant should be saved for a special occasion. The interiors are very cosy and traditional, and the food is exceptional. I would definitely recommend the codfish in the oven with potatoes. You also have some vegetarian dishes available, as well as gluten free. Check location here

4. Joao Portugal Ramos winery

This winery is more than a wine tasting destination. Here you can go for a walk with friend, or have lunch, but also truly experience local wines and food. There are several programs to do here, such as “being a wine expert for a day”, a cooking lesson, or even grape picking during the season.

5. Living science centre

If you are with kids (10+) and want to have a bit more ludic activity, the living science centre is a great option for a few hours of entertainment. There’s a special focus on geology but you can also learn about the solar system, to produce your own earthquake or even touch remains of a meteorite.
